31 letters, one envelope and 12 postcards from German expressionist, Erich Heckel, written between 1918 and 1958. The Mayers were art collectors and personal friends of the Heckels. Subjects include living conditions during World War I and after World War II; Heckel's attempt to acquire paintings from Charles Ensor for the Mayers and prints for himself; the Mayers' contact with Feininger; Heckel's exhibition at Franke gallery (8/29/27); Heckel's painting in France and the impact of color and light (11/11/29); Heckel's concern for his Jewish friends (in letters after 1933); his ability to work after his defamation in 1937 as a degenerate artist; Heckel's work in lithography (1/1/49); his teaching and commissions at the Karlsruhe Akademie(8/18/53).
